Supreme Court gives EC green light to begin voters registration exercise

The Supreme Court of Ghana has given the Electoral Commission green light to begin with the compilation of a new voters register.

The ruling was decided by a 7-member panel presided by Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah on June 25, 2020.

The Superior Court said, the Electoral Commission is an independent body and should in case acts contrary will be directed by the law.
There was a misunderstanding between the biggest opposition party NDC and the office of the AG whether the court will allowed the use of the existing ID card.

Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the biggest opposition party NDC Johnson Aseidu Nketia popularly known as "General Mosquito" in an interview with the media said the court had ruled in the party's favour.
The counsel of the parties involved are waiting at the court premises for a written order for clarity on the ruling.

BACKGROUND

The NDC sued the Electoral Commission over it's decision to compile a new voters' register in the come December 2020 elections at the Supreme Court.
The National Democratic Congress clearly stated their position against the decision by the electoral commission to compile a new voters' register but the Electoral Commission says that it will go ahead with it's decision.

The opposition party was seeking for court's order to refrain the EC from compiling a new voters' register and another order declaring as illegal the decision of the EC not to consider the old voter ID cards as a proof of citizenship for registering to 

But the Superior court gave them a directive to make a choice on which of their two reliefs they wanted a decision on.

It is for this reason the NDC dropped the case which questions the power of the Electoral Commission to compile a new voters register.

It's for this reason the National Democratic Congress dropped the case to questions the power of the EC to compile a new voters' register.
