Some Achievements of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Kwame Nkrumah was born on Sept 21, 1909, at Nkroful, Gold Coast [now Ghana]—died April 27, 1972, Bucharest, Rom, Ghanaian nationalist leader who led the Gold Coast’s drive for independence from Britain and presided over its emergence as the new nation of Ghana. He headed the country from independence in 1957 until he was overthrown by a coup in 1966. Below are some achievements under his watch;

The building of the Harbour, Tema Motorway, Tema Township (Communities), Labone Estate, Kanda Estates, Osu Ringway Estates, Airport Residential Area, Kwadaso Estate, Buokrom Estates among many other residential settlements.

The construction of the gigantic hydroelectric Volta Dam at Akosombo which provides electricity for Ghana and beyond.

Kwame Nkrumah suppressed sectionalism and tribalism in Ghana and brought a sense of national unity among Ghanaians.

Nkrumah relentlessly pursued his idea of Pan-Africanism and greatly contributed to the formation of the OAU in 1963.

Kwame Nkrumah was the first to lead his people to overthrow colonial power in black Africa which inspired other Africa countries in West Africa to do the same.

He became the winner of the Lenin Peace Prize Award for his efforts towards uniting Ghana and Africa for continental developments in 1963.

He constructed the nation’s best teaching hospitals like Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. He also established the Ghana Medical School and provided free Medicare to all citizens.

He developed many educational infrastructures such as the University of Ghana, University of Cape Coast, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology, many polytechnics and secondary schools across the country.

He set up many factories and industries such as Zuarungu Meat Factory, Wenchi Tomato Factory, Komenda Sugar Factory, Akosombo Textiles Limited, Nsawam Cannery, Brick and Tile Factory, Bolgatanga Rice Mill Factory and GIHOC Fibre Products Company among many other factories.

ALL OF THE ABOVE AND MANY MORE WERE ACHIEVED IN LESS THAN 10 YEARS (1957 – 1966). Out of envy and mismanagement, most of the factories built under his administration were left to decay.

In 2000, he was voted Africa’s man of the millennium by listeners to the BBC World Service, being described by the BBC as a “Hero of Independence,” and an “International symbol of freedom as the leader of the first black African country to shake off the chains of colonial rule.
